Free Blogging Platform vs Self-Hosted Websites

Although you can always choose other marketing channels (e.g., videos), affiliate programs will ask you to provide a URL of your site. So having a site is a must.

There are two general types of sites that you can choose to create, paid or free.

Paid sites are otherwise known as "self-hosted sites" -- meaning, you'll have your own domain name and you'll have to pay for web hosting. Free sites, on the other hand, are usually blogging platforms that you can easily sign up for and publish your content in. Examples include Wordress, Blogger, and Weebly.

Here are the pros and cons of each type of sites.

For free blogging sites, the obvious advantage is that they're free. The catch is, you don't have total control of your content. If Blogger, for instance, decides to change its TOS, who knows how this could affect your site.

Self-hosted sites have pros and cons that are opposite those of free blogging platforms. To keep them running, you need to pay a renewal fee depending on the package you signed up for.

But between self-hosted and free sites, seasoned affiliate marketers would tell you to choose the former. What you want is to protect your content from changing TOS, which leads to the possibility of your content taken down.

This is not to say, however, that you should totally avoid free sites. In fact, these platforms also have their uses. For instance, beginners can use them to hone your skills. Also, they can be used to test whether or not a product can be successful. Last, you can also use these sites for SEO / backlinking purposes.
